When it comes to kicking the habit of smoking, it can be much easier said than done, with lots of Brits wanting to quit smoking without ever actually trying.
However, vaping is becoming much more popular as a method for helping people to stop smoking, so we’ve created a quick guide to give you everything you need to know when making the switch.
What is vaping?
Vaping refers to the act of inhaling and exhaling vapour produced by an e-cigarette.
The e-cigarette device is made up of a mod (or battery), an atomiser (or tank) and a bottle of e-liquid. When you turn your device on, the mod powers the unit which heats up the atomiser through a coil. The atomiser then turns the e-liquid inside the bottle into vapour, which is then inhaled in the same way as inhaling smoke from a traditional cigarette.

What are the benefits?
Vaping offers a lot of benefits in comparison to smoking traditional tobacco cigarettes, from helping your health to thickening your wallet.
In terms of your health, vaping can massively reduce the risks of dying of a smoking-related illness. With tobacco cigarettes causing 1 in 2 deaths of all long-term smokers and 90% of lung cancers, switching to vaping can help to reduce these effects by removing the harmful smoke produced by tobacco cigs.
In fact, benefits are shown to set in just 20 minutes after your last cigarette, with vaping really helping you to kick the habit to the curb.
Switching to vaping also benefits the health of your loved ones by reducing their exposure to secondhand smoking.
In addition, vaping can help you to save lots of money in comparison to smoking. With the average smoker spending around £141 a month on cigarettes, which equates to over £1500 a year, vaping costs as little as £15 a month after the initial outlay of a starter kit.
Vaping is also considered to be much less addictive as you can control the amount of nicotine present in your vaping liquid, with many vapers eventually working down to zero nicotine products.
What will you need?
Whilst many vapers will have lots of complex equipment, to get started, you only really need three main things:
- A vaping starter kit
- The will to pack in smoking
Vaping starter kit
It’s easy to feel overwhelmed when it comes to switching to vaping as there are lots of different devices available, often more complex than you actually need.
We recommend getting a starter kit which will provide you with everything you need to start vaping. Within a kit, you’ll commonly find an e-cigarette device (which is made up of the mod, atomiser and coil), a charger, batteries, and sometimes a bottle of e-liquid.
The price usually ranges between £25 to £40 for a decent kit but it’s well worth investing a bit more to make sure they last longer. Plus, once you’ve bought the kit, you’ll only be paying £5-£10 each week for a bottle of liquid, depending on how frequently you use it.
Vaping kits can be bought on the high street or from online shops like Cloudz Vapour.
The e-liquid is what you’ll be inhaling so it’s important to make sure you get a flavour that you like!
You can get e-liquids in a whole range of weird and wonderful tastes, from milk and cereal to menthol and strawberries, so it’s a great way to get creative and keep your vaping interesting!
E-liquids also come in varying levels of nicotine to suit your needs, which is especially helpful when you’re trying to quit smoking, as well as different levels of PG/VG, which you can learn more about here.
The will to quit smoking
Finally, one of the most important things you’ll need is the will to pack in smoking.
Unfortunately, a vaping device can only help you so far, so you need to really have the willpower to overcome the habit.
This is much easier said than done, especially when a habit is so ingrained in our daily lives, but there are lots of resources out there to help you on your journey, including fellow vaping communities. It’s well worth the effort once you’ve achieved it and just thinking about all the benefits you’re receiving can help to keep you motivated!
So, that’s everything you need to know about switching from smoking to vaping. Now all that’s left is for you to take the plunge!
